Nelo: The Vision Behind Nelomania

By

Q: What is your name and where did you grow up?

A: Well, I’d hope you already know my name! I’m Chinelo and I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria.

Q: What were you like as a kid—any funny or unexpected habits, hobbies, or quirks?

A: I want to say I was a peaceful and quiet child, but my mom taught me not to lie — I was definitely chatty! I would jump from pillar to post all the time. One of the weirdest things I did was lick baby powder. I remember the exact one too: shoutout to Agnesia dusting powder.

Q: What’s a favorite family tradition or recipe you love?

A: CHRISTMAS!!! My mom ate with that I won’t lie. We would track Santa on CNN, and once he was close to Africa we’d quickly set up Royal Dansk Danish butter cookies and milk for him before going to bed. My mom would wake us up the next day to find so many gifts under the tree. Now that we’re all grown up, Santa is really just mommy, and we’ve switched to spending Christmas with our close family friends, it’s a full sleepover with our best friends and we still wrap gifts.

Q: When you’re not working on your magazine, how do you like to spend your time?

A: The big three: cooking, sleeping, or playing Call of Duty… just kidding, not really. I spend my time doing anything creative—I work on design projects and plan on adding ceramics and maybe printmaking to my hobbies.

Q: Do you have a hobby or skill that surprises people?

A: I’d say cooking. With how packed my schedule is, it suprises people that I enjoy it—or even find the time to do it—but there’s just something relaxing about it.

Q: Who or what inspires you most, both personally and creatively?

A: Personally, it would be my mom—nothing shakes that lady. She can be going through a hellish time and still come out on top. Creatively it’s my cousin, Georgia. I want to feature her in my Spotlight series, so I won’t say much on her but she’s definitely my biggest creative inspiration.

Q: Can you tell us about your magazine/project and what inspired you to start it?

A: If you know me you know I have a thousand and one thoughts—but I never felt confident putting them on Tiktok or Instagram. I always worried I’d be judged, or that my ideas wouldn’t match the platforms aesthetic. In retrospect, I probably sold myself short. But there’s something about having my own corner of the internet, where I don’t have to worry about likes.

This was originally meant to be a physical magazine but this digital version is more accessible—don’t worry there’ll be physical aspects coming soon.

What inspired me? Honestly, I’m not sure—just thought about it and poof it’s here. But if you ask who pushed me to do it, I’d say my mom and Georgia. They definitely held me accountable.

Q: How do you decide what content to create or feature?

A: You know, I actually made a whole different website before this. I spent nine months trying to figure out what should make the cut and what shouldn’t. I had to put myself in the consumer’s shoes and decide what would hold their attention—and what topics I could keep talking about without losing my spark.

Q: Can you walk us through a typical day when you’re working on the magazine?

A: Do you know I worked on it for twelve hours straight yesterday? I usually get back from class at 4pm, so I work on it from then until about 7pm—because that’s my bedtime. But sometimes I get so into it that I check the clock and it’s 2am. So, to answer your question: I just do it whenever I have free time.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of what you do, and how do you overcome it?

A: The hardest part is deciding what to include and what to leave out. This magazine is my baby so I want to give it everything—but sometimes everything is just too much.

Q: If someone walked into your room right now, what would they notice first about you?

A: I’m very organized—nothing is out of place because it drives me nuts.

Q: Do you have a favorite book, show, or movie that you keep coming back to? Why?

A: My favorite books are the Percy Jackson series and the Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan—I love them. Ouuuu, and The Nsibidi Scripts by Nnedi Okorafor. My favorite shows are Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Proud Family, Gravity Falls, and The Originals. Sorry, I really can’t pick just one!

Q: What’s a place you’ve been to (or want to go) that feels special to you?

A: DISNEYLAND!!! Yes, I’m a Disney adult— I don’t care.

Q: If you could collaborate with any person or brand, who would it be and why?

A: Fenty would be amazing, but really any beauty brand works. They have so many design projects lined up, which gives you multiple chances to implement ideas across different areas.

Q: How do you want people to feel when they experience your magazine or content?

A: I want them to feel like they’re inside my brain.

Q: What’s a little-known fact about you?

A: I love talking—but I guess you know that by now! I really enjoy it when people want to have long, thoughtful discussions.

Q: What’s next for you—any upcoming projects or goals you’re excited about?

A: I just gave birth to this, so nothing else for now. I do have a biiig project in the works, but call me in two years and I’ll give you all the details!
